Secret Gallipoli: 5 beaches beyond Baia Verde
Beyond the city beach, there are kilometers of less frequented coast. Here's where to go when Baia Verde is too crowded.
Baia Verde is Baia Verde: legendary sunsets, open-air discos, a three-kilometer-long white beach. But from mid-July to the end of August, it becomes a parody of itself, with queues for umbrellas and music that doesn't stop even at three in the morning. The good news is that just a few kilometers away, you can find a quieter Salento.
These are five alternatives, all reachable in 15-30 minutes from Gallipoli center, ordered from north to south.
1. Padula Bianca
8 km north of Gallipoli, it's the fine white sand beach locals use when Baia Verde is unmanageable. Protected at the back by a dune area — the only one in the area still intact — and with shallow water for over 40 meters, it's perfect for children and those who want to relax. Parking: free along the provincial road to Porto Cesareo, then 150 meters on foot through the scrub. When: great with SE wind (offshore). Avoid with libeccio.
2. Lido Pizzo
The southernmost point of the Gulf of Gallipoli, 12 km from the center. It's the place I go when I want to eat sea urchins and have a coffee at Trabucchi. Mixed sand-pebble beach, crystal clear water, no music, few umbrellas. The name "Pizzo" comes from the rocky point that closes it to the south.
«Lido Pizzo is the Gallipoli that was 30 years ago. Just move 12 kilometers away.»
3. Punta della Suina
5 km south of Gallipoli. Small sandy cove protected by a rocky point, crystal clear water, view of the island of Sant'Andrea. A bit more touristy than the other two, but still livable. Parking: paid near the lido (€7/day), or along the coastal road (free, 300m on foot). Tip: enter from the free access to the right of the lido, they won't ask you anything.
4. Baia Verde Nord (via Canneto side)
Okay, technically it's still Baia Verde. But no one knows it. The northern stretch, beyond the "Cavalluccio Marino" lido, has the same sea but zero umbrellas because there are no concessions. Parking: difficult, arrive before 9 or after 18. Services: none. Bring everything from home. The reward is a beach like 15 years ago, with the same sea as the one you pay €50 for.
A warning
These "wild" beaches have no lifeguards. In Salento, there are accidents every year in unsupervised areas, often due to underestimating currents. If the QualeSpiaggia score is below 70, avoid those without a tower. If you have children, always favor areas with a lifeguard.
5. Torre Sabea
The northern alternative to Baia Verde, 10 km from Gallipoli towards Porto Cesareo. Long beach ending at Torre Sabea (from the 1500s, restored). Shallow seabed, golden sand with coarse grains. Low frequency even in August because it's between two tourist centers but has no own identity — good, means less crowd.
If you stay there until sunset, the sun sets into the sea exactly behind the tower: it's one of those views you won't forget.
The criterion for choosing
To summarize. If you want white sand + services + family: Padula Bianca. If you want atmosphere + food + less crowd: Lido Pizzo. If you want photos + sunset + moderate people: Punta della Suina. If you want zero everything + absolute peace: Baia Verde Nord or Torre Sabea.
What I no longer tell tourists: avoid going to Baia Verde in August between the 10th and 25th. Three kilometers of beach contained in 4 hectares of sand are not enough for 30,000 people a day. Try one of these five. We'll both be grateful.
