Lido delle Nazioni: beach guide
What the beach is like
Lido delle Nazioni is a seaside and tourist resort in the municipality of Comacchio, in the province of Ferrara, and is one of the seven Lidi di Comacchio. According to Wikipedia, the resort has 898 residents. The beach is sandy, looks out onto the Adriatic Sea and faces east. The centre of Lido delle Nazioni is 0.3 km as the crow flies from the beach point used in the data.
The resort has wide streets, plenty of greenery and many shops. The beaches are easy to reach from the seafront. The resort includes a stretch of state-owned pine forest and a lake about 3.5 km long.
The name comes from the idea of the Comacchio municipal administration to name streets and squares after states, geographical regions and continents. The resort was founded in 1960 to meet the demand for holiday homes. The urban development plan was drawn up by the architect Salvatore Alberio of Como in January 1960.
Getting there
The Raccordo Autostradale 8 links Comacchio with Ferrara and with the A13. The state road 309 Romea can also be used. According to Wikivoyage, Comacchio and its lidi can be reached from Ferrara on the TPER scheduled buses. The reference airport is Bologna, named after Guglielmo Marconi.
In 2026 the regional tourism portal lists a tourist information and welcome office (IAT mobile) at Lido delle Nazioni, open from April to mid-September. Before setting off, it is worth checking up-to-date connections.
When to go
With the north-easterly (grecale), easterly (levante) and sirocco (scirocco) the wind blows from the sea and the beach is exposed to waves and rough water. With the south-westerly (libeccio), westerly (ponente) and mistral (maestrale) the wind blows from land and the beach is sheltered, with generally calmer water close to shore. The northerly (tramontana) and southerly (ostro) winds, by contrast, arrive side-on. These indications are derived from the orientation of the coast, not weather forecasts.
The bathing ordinance of the Emilia-Romagna Region, in the text updated in April 2026, sets the bathing activity period from the third weekend of May to the third weekend of September. During this period, according to the ordinance, lifeguard services must operate at the bathing facilities. In the text updated in 2026, beach establishments are open to the public for bathing at least from 9.30 to 18.30.
According to Wikipedia, the resort is particularly attractive in summer, when a large funfair is open. The same article notes that every Wednesday in summer a market with stalls is set up on the seafront.
Seabed and sea
In the 2025 season the European Environment Agency (EEA) rated the bathing water quality of this stretch as excellent. In 2026 Comacchio appears in the FEE list of Blue Flag locations for several lidi, including that of the Nazioni. For 2024 too Lido delle Nazioni had received the Blue Flag for the purity of its waters and environmental sustainability.
The regional bathing ordinance reserves for bathing the sea area between the mouth of the Po di Goro and the municipality of Cattolica, for a strip of 300 metres from the shoreline. If the seabed, within 50 metres of the shoreline, has holes, sudden drops caused by exceptional weather events or submerged obstacles, the ordinance requires the beach establishment concessionaires to mark them with signs. In the sea it is advisable to stay within the supervised areas and follow the lifeguards' instructions.
Facilities and free beach
Wikipedia lists among the tourist services discos, bars, stalls, shops, restaurants, holiday villages, riding stables, a spa, an oasis and areas for water sports. According to the article, there are also beach pubs, created from the bars of the beach establishments. According to Emilia Romagna Turismo, between the sea and the Parco del Delta del Po there is a wide range of hotels, holiday houses and apartments, campsites and holiday villages. The portal also mentions a spa facility using salt-bromine-iodine water, inside a camp-village on the sea. Wikivoyage lists a branch of the Cavalieri D'Oro pharmacy on viale Germania.
On free beaches the regional ordinance forbids leaving umbrellas, chairs, deckchairs, tents or small boats after sunset. In free areas where no lifeguard service is provided, the municipalities must put up clearly visible signs, written in English, French and German as well.
Rules and protected areas
The regional bathing ordinance updated in 2026 forbids bringing or keeping animals on the beaches during the summer bathing season, even with a muzzle and lead. Exempt from the ban are, among others, rescue dogs working for the lifeguard service and guide dogs for the blind. Concessionaires may, however, set up equipped and fenced-off areas for pets within their establishments. The municipalities, too, may designate signposted areas on free beaches where access with animals is allowed, by means of a specific ordinance.
On the beaches the ordinance also forbids lighting fires or bonfires and throwing any kind of waste into the sea or leaving it on the sand. The shoreline strip, at least 5 metres wide, is reserved exclusively for free passage and may not be occupied with umbrellas, chairs or deckchairs. Games such as football, beach tennis and volleyball are banned on the sand if they may cause harm or nuisance to people, and are allowed in equipped areas or those set aside for this purpose. According to the ordinance, bathing is forbidden, among other places, inside the landing corridors for pleasure craft, which are marked.
With children
According to Emilia Romagna Turismo, the beaches are well suited to children's fun thanks to slides, swings and pools. With young children it is worth bringing water, a hat and sunscreen.
Nearby
The Lago delle Nazioni is a brackish basin, the result of hydraulic works, with an area of about a hundred hectares. Eels and grey mullet live in the lake, while the wildlife includes coots, little grebes and kingfishers. Every year the lake hosts water sports such as water skiing, competitive sailing and canoeing. The lake is home to the national sailing centre of the Lega navale italiana, where sailing, canoeing and kayaking are practised.
Visitors can see the Capanno di Garibaldi in the resort, where on 3 August 1849 Garibaldi landed as a fugitive with the dying Anita. Anita died the following day at Mandriole di Ravenna.
Beyond the Acciaioli panoramic road lies the Valle Bertuzzi, about 2,000 hectares that also include Val Cantone and Valle Nuova. The valley is clearly visible from the road, with expanses of pink flamingos. Just outside the built-up area of Lido delle Nazioni lie the Valli di Comacchio lagoons, which can be visited by bicycle or motorboat. The regional portal suggests the woods of Mesola and Santa Giustina for a walk in nature after the beach.
Comacchio lies 7.3 km as the crow flies south-west of the beach. Wikivoyage describes it as the main town of the Po Delta, originally built on thirteen small islands. Along the coast, Lido di Pomposa lies 3 km as the crow flies south of the beach. Lido di Volano is 6.3 km as the crow flies to the north.
