Mondello: beach guide
What the beach is like
Mondello is the long beach of fine white sand belonging to the seaside district of the same name, in the municipality of Palermo: it is 1.5 km long and has beach clubs and equipped cabins. The municipality's tourism portal calls it the Palermo residents' beach par excellence and one of the most sought-after beaches in the Palermo area.
Mondello is a district and resort enclosed between Monte Pellegrino and Monte Gallo, a few kilometres from Palermo. Until the end of the nineteenth century it was marshland; after reclamation it became an elegant seaside resort and the summer residence of Palermo's middle classes. At the end of the beach, towards Capo Gallo, lies the old fishing village, today the centre of Mondello. Valdesi, a district of Mondello, was a marshy area reclaimed in 1890 at the behest of the Prince of Scalea and the mayor Emanuele Paternò. In 1910 the reclaimed land was granted to the Società Italo-Belga Les Tramways de Palerme, which helped make Valdesi one of the most renowned seaside resorts in Europe.
On the water stands the Stabilimento Balneare (bathing establishment), also known as the Charleston. It is the only communal building constructed on piles, with terraces, large halls and two long side wings housing 350 masonry cabins. It was designed by the architect Rodolfo Stualker, who completed it in 1911-12 and linked it to the mainland with a long promenade, also on piles, with a monumental exedra entrance.
Getting there
Palermo lies 10.1 km south of the beach as the crow flies. The village is separated from the bustle of the city by the green lung of the Parco della Favorita and can be reached by car or bus, along the many tree-lined royal avenues or via secondary roads. The Sicilian Region's tourism portal describes it as easy to reach from the centre of Palermo.
The municipal portal lists the beach as accessible to people with disabilities and gives viale Regina Elena as its address.
When to go
The municipality's tourism portal presents summer as the season of events, with the gulf of Mondello as the venue for festivals and events of national importance. The same portal mentions as an annual event the World Festival on the Beach, which began as the Windsurf World Festival and was renamed in 2001; it brings together sports from windsurfing to beach volleyball, as well as music shows. In April 2026 the city council executive approved a plan of measures worth about €300 thousand for the start of the summer season, valid until 31 May 2026, which extends beach cleaning to the whole month of May.
Judging by the orientation of the coast, the beach faces east. It is exposed to the north-easterly (grecale), the easterly (levante) and the south-easterly (scirocco), which blow in from the sea; it is sheltered from the south-westerly (libeccio), the westerly (ponente) and the north-westerly (maestrale), which blow from the land. The northerly (tramontana) and the southerly (ostro) strike it side-on. This is an indication based on orientation, not a forecast.
Seabed and sea
The beach is made of fine sand and faces the Tyrrhenian Sea. The municipal portal lists bathing as permitted. In the 2025 season the European Environment Agency rated the bathing water quality as good.
The municipal plan of April 2026 provides for managing the beached posidonia by burying it and covering it with sand. The same plan provides for the purchase and placing of buoys to mark areas at sea.
Facilities and free beach
Entry to the free beach is free of charge, according to the municipality's tourism portal. Along the beach there are beach clubs and equipped cabins.
For people with disabilities, the municipality's tourism portal lists at the Lido Acqua Marina, among the Italo Belga facilities, 4 stations with a walkway up to the umbrella, each with 1 umbrella and 2 sunloungers on a wooden platform, reachable by wheelchair, plus Job chairs for getting into the sea. On 24 July 2019 an equipped beach for people with disabilities, with a ramp and walkway, had been inaugurated at the Lido Balneare di Mondello run by Mondello Immobiliare Italo Belga.
The municipal plan of April 2026 also provides for bins and containers for separate waste collection, access points for people with disabilities and first-aid stations run by the national health service. On the Valdesi–Piazza Mondello stretch, the plan entrusts RAP with emptying the bins daily and cleaning the stations at least three times as often.
Rules and protected areas
In March 2026 the regional department for Land and Environment published the notice to assign 13 state-owned areas of the beach, plots of a thousand square metres each for tourist, recreational and sports purposes. The authorisations are short-term, for a maximum of 90 days between June and October, and only for the 2026 bathing season. Among the obligations of the notice for successful applicants in the 2026 season are cleaning, upkeep and safety of the area, a ban on installing rows of cabins and a ban on using turnstiles or other devices that restrict access to the beach. The Region's announcement also reported a clause, included in the decree, allowing the Region to revoke the call if the administrative court, to which the company Italo belga had appealed, suspended the procedure as an interim measure.
On safety, the municipal plan of April 2026 provides for monitoring and rescue services, including dog units and radio coordination, as well as daily patrols by the municipal police, stepped up at weekends and in the evenings. Before setting off, it is worth checking the rules in force on the municipality's website.
With children
Since 2016 Mondello beach has held the Green Flag, the award for child-friendly beaches, as the municipality's tourism portal reports. For young children it is useful to bring shade and enough water.
Nearby
Mondello is bounded by the Riserva naturale orientata di Capo Gallo, a nature reserve covering 586 hectares with several landing points from which you can dive into the sea. Addaura beach lies 1.1 km to the south-east as the crow flies. 4.3 km to the west is the rocky Sferracavallo beach.
The village grew up in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries around a tuna fishery dating from 1455, with a tower defending the tuna fishermen's houses and a small church dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie. The tuna fishery buildings and the little church were demolished in the early fifties of the last century. In the centre you can taste typical Palermo food or buy freshly caught fish.
Many of the Liberty-style (Art Nouveau) villas, the oldest dating from 1910, were designed by Ernesto Basile, one of Palermo's most important architects. The municipality's tourism portal describes them as the finest expression of Art Nouveau in Italy. Among those still visible are Villa Tasca, with a polychrome stained-glass window, the Villino Gregoretti, designed by Basile in 1924, and the Villino Petrulla.
