Lido degli Estensi: beach guide
What the beach is like
The beach of Lido degli Estensi lies in the municipality of Comacchio, in the province of Ferrara, and faces the Adriatic Sea. Lido degli Estensi is a seaside resort in the province of Ferrara and one of the seven Lidi di Comacchio. It takes its name from the Este family (Estensi), who ruled Ferrara for a long time. The beach is sandy: modern beach establishments line long stretches of fine sand.
The official tourism website of Emilia-Romagna names a lively social scene as the resort's main feature and calls it the resort for having fun and the beach of the young, with a shopping avenue full of boutiques. Wikivoyage describes it as the most touristy of the seven Lidi di Comacchio. The town has residents in winter too, with a parish church, a school complex and a marina.
In the seventeenth century the area where the resort now stands was part of the Scaglia di Bellocchio, which later passed largely to the Patrignani family. In the thirties numerous stone pines were planted along this coast, extending the Pineta di Classe. Within twenty years the trees had created a green strip between the lagoons and the sea. In the fifties the area began its transformation for tourism and bathing, with apartment blocks, hotels and infrastructure, which led in part to the felling of the pines. In the mid-twentieth century the Patrignani family sold the property to the brothers Mario and Ivan Gardini and to Amerigo Pasolini, who started property and land-division schemes for tourism. Many buildings were designed by the Cesena architect Saul Bravetti, including the restaurant la Vela d'Oro, closed in 2011 and later demolished. In 1961 the church of San Paolo was built, also designed by Bravetti.
Getting there
The beach lies 1.9 km as the crow flies north of Lido di Spina and 1.4 km south-east of Porto Garibaldi. It is separated from Porto Garibaldi by the canal port, where widening works began in 2013. Comacchio lies 6.1 km as the crow flies north-west of the beach.
To reach Comacchio by car you can use the Raccordo Autostradale 8, which links Comacchio with Ferrara and the A13, and the strada statale 309 Romea. Comacchio and its resorts can also be reached from Ferrara by TPER scheduled buses.
When to go
According to the regional tourism portal, the mobile tourist information office of Lido degli Estensi is open from April to mid-September. The beach faces east. With the north-easterly grecale, the easterly levante and the south-easterly scirocco, the wind blows in from the sea: the beach is exposed and the sea can be rough. With the south-westerly libeccio, the westerly ponente and the north-westerly mistral (maestrale), the wind blows from the land: the beach is sheltered and the water close to shore tends to be calmer. The northerly tramontana and the southerly ostro blow across the coast instead. This is an indication derived from the beach's orientation, not a forecast.
Seabed and sea
The sea in front of the resort's beaches is calm and shelves gently. In the 2025 season the European Environment Agency rated the bathing water quality of this stretch as excellent. The resort was awarded the Blue Flag in 2019. In 2026 Lido degli Estensi also appears in the Blue Flag list for the municipality of Comacchio, together with Lido Spina and the other Comacchio resorts.
Facilities and free beach
For young people there are clubs, bars and various opportunities for sport, from beach tennis to beach volleyball. In the evening there are dance, step and aerobics classes. Viale Carducci stays lively until late in the evening and is full of nightspots and shops. The Marina degli Estensi tourist harbour is reached from the Porto Garibaldi canal and is described as a safe berth for boaters, with modern equipment.
Each of the Lidi di Comacchio has plenty of places to eat, especially during the bathing season. For accommodation, every resort has hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs.
With children
The regional tourism portal considers the beach ideal for children to have fun, as they can play and swim without worries, and for families. It is still wise to keep a constant eye on little ones in the water and to bring enough water.
Nearby
Lido di Spina, 1.9 km to the south, is according to the regional portal the southernmost of the 7 lidi di Comacchio and has one of the longest beaches on the riviera. It is home to the Remo Brindisi Museum of Contemporary Art, built between 1971 and 1973 to a design by the architect and designer Nanda Vigo. Porto Garibaldi, 1.4 km to the north-west, began as a fishing village and was the first seaside settlement of the Comacchio resorts. In summer, boats leave from its small fishing harbour to visit the Po Delta and for sport fishing for mackerel and little tunny.
The historic centre of Comacchio, capital of the Delta Park, has a dense network of bridges and canals. Just outside Lido degli Estensi lie the Valli di Comacchio lagoons, which can be visited by bike or by motorboat. According to the park authority, the lagoons form the largest complex of brackish wetlands in the region and are a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. Their average depth is around 50-60 cm. Nearby there are also Valle Bertuzzi (km 10), with its sunset landscapes, and the Mesola and Santa Giustina woods (km 20), suited to a walk in nature.
The Bellocchio protected area, with active sand dunes, a large brackish inlet and the mouth of the river Reno, is a site of high environmental diversity. Over the last fifty years the northern part of the site has undergone intensive urbanisation linked to Lido di Spina. The site includes the Sacca di Bellocchio, a Ramsar wetland of 213 hectares.
