Complete guide

Lido del Sole beach (Bibione): a guide to the beach

What the beach is like

Lido del Sole beach lies in the municipality of San Michele al Tagliamento, in Veneto, and faces the Adriatic Sea. The Lido del Sole district is 0.5 km as the crow flies north-west of the beach. Lido del Sole is one of the districts into which Bibione, a frazione of the municipality of San Michele al Tagliamento, is divided. According to Wikivoyage, the main districts, from east to west, are Lido dei Pini, Bibione Spiaggia, Lido del Sole and Bibione Pineda. Wikipedia instead counts 5 areas and places Lido del Sole between the Terme (the spa) and the Bosco Canoro woodland, which separates it from Bibione Pineda. Lido dei Pini is 2.6 km as the crow flies east of the beach, Bibione Pineda 2.4 km as the crow flies to the west.

According to Wikivoyage, Lido del Sole is the spa district, quieter and less crowded. The Bibione shoreline is 11.5 km long, with a beach on average 400 metres deep, fine soft sand and modern, well-equipped bathing establishments. Bibione is an island bounded to the east by the Tagliamento river and facing the Adriatic Sea to the south. Reclamation of the marshland began in 1866, and the embankment and canal works were completed around 1930, reclaiming more than 10,000 hectares. Tourist development in Bibione began in 1956 with the first hotels and the development of the beach area.

Getting there

Bibione is linked to the hinterland by the Strada Regionale 74 San Michele al Tagliamento-Bibione. Latisana is 16.6 km as the crow flies north of the beach, Portogruaro 22.2 km as the crow flies to the north-west. Bibione has no railway station of its own and is served by Latisana-Lignano-Bibione station, which can be reached by coach. Wikipedia points to Portogruaro station as an increasingly important reference, since Frecciarossa and Frecciargento trains also stop there. There is also a direct bus between Bibione and Venice Marco Polo airport (Venezia).

In summer 2 urban bus lines run by ATVO connect the different districts of Bibione, and line 1 also stops at Lido del Sole. A 10 km scenic cycle path runs along the entire length of Bibione beach, from the lighthouse at the mouth of the Tagliamento to Bibione Pineda. According to the English-language Wikivoyage, in high season, especially at weekends, parking is scarce and many spaces are paid between late April and late September. Since summer 2018 a foot and cycle ferry has crossed the Tagliamento between the Bibione lighthouse and the Marina Uno harbour in Lignano.

When to go

According to QualeSpiaggia data, the beach faces south. With this orientation the scirocco (south-east wind), the ostro (south wind) and the libeccio (south-west wind) blow in from the sea and can bring waves. The tramontana (north wind), the grecale (north-east wind) and the maestrale (north-west wind), by contrast, blow from the land: the beach is more sheltered and the sea close to shore tends to be calmer. The levante (east wind) and the ponente (west wind) blow across the beach. This is an indication based on orientation, not a forecast.

The season runs from April to the end of September. July and August are the months with the most tourists, while in June and September you can stay away from the crowds. Many shops and beach facilities are open only during the summer season. According to Wikivoyage, the spa is open all year round, while the English-language version of the guide states that the Bibione Thermae centre closes in November.

Seabed and sea

This stretch is a sandy beach. In the 2025 season the European Environment Agency rated the bathing water quality of this stretch as excellent. For the municipality of San Michele al Tagliamento, the FEE Blue Flag (Bandiera Blu) 2026 list includes Bibione.

In Bibione you have to go a long way from the shore to find deep water. The sea at Bibione may not look very clear because of the fine sand on the bottom and the algae brought by currents, but this does not mean it is dirty. The jellyfish of the Adriatic are not life-threatening, but can irritate the skin.

Facilities and free beach

Bibione beach is divided into sections, with rows of umbrellas, chairs and deckchairs belonging to the individual hotels. Other sets can be rented even without staying at a hotel, and there are free spaces where you can set up your own umbrella and chairs. On the beach there are many children's playgrounds, volleyball courts, entertainment, pedal-boat hire and windsurfing schools. On the beach there are also bins of different colours for separate waste collection.

Rules and protected areas

According to the English-language Wikipedia, in summer 2014 smoking was banned between the shoreline and the first row of umbrellas, and Bibione became Italy's first smoke-free beach. Since 2019 the ban has applied to the whole beach, except in the designated smoking areas. According to the English-language Wikivoyage, during the summer season animals are not allowed on the beach, except in the designated area in Lido dei Pini, namely the Spiaggia di Pluto and the free stretch east of it. The same guide advises against swimming at the two ends of Bibione beach, where the Tagliamento and the Lovi canal flow into the sea, because there may be strong currents, and points out that it is forbidden there anyway.

It is best not to walk on the vegetation of the sandy areas along the beach, which is very fragile, and not to shower with soap or shampoo on the beach, because there is no sewer system. It is also best not to walk on the rock or wooden breakwaters, which can become very slippery with water and algae. According to Wikipedia, Bibione was the first tourist site in Europe to obtain EMAS environmental certification.

With children

According to the English-language Wikivoyage, Bibione's very wide beach and shallow water are very well suited to families with children. The guide also mentions the Luna Park Adriatico amusement park, open every evening between June and September. With small children it is best to bring a hat, water and sun cream.

Nearby

The Bibione spa, opened in 1996, uses mineral water drawn from a depth of more than 400 metres, at a temperature of 52 °C. Bibione's natural areas include the Baseleghe woodland in Lido del Sole and the botanical garden by the Bibione Thermae spa. Porto Baseleghe, on the Laguna dei Lovi, is Bibione's harbour.

The Punta Tagliamento lighthouse, built in 1913, houses a small museum on its history and can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. The lantern is 25 metres high, and there is also a two-storey building that once housed the keepers. Caorle is 12 km as the crow flies west of the beach, Lignano Sabbiadoro 10.6 km as the crow flies to the north-east.
