Lido di Savio: beach guide

What the beach is like

Lido di Savio, also called Lido del Savio, is a hamlet of the municipality of Ravenna and a seaside resort on the Romagna riviera. It faces the northern Adriatic. According to the tourism website of the municipality of Ravenna, it is the southernmost seaside resort on the whole Ravenna coast. It takes its name from the Savio river, whose mouth separates it from Lido di Classe to the north, while to the south the Cupa canal divides it from Milano Marittima. The resort is set between the course of the Savio river and the Pineta di Cervia pine forest and has more than fifty hotels.

The village grew along the shore from the fifties of the twentieth century onwards. In the fifties and sixties tourists informally called it Bologna Mare, and some maps of the period also show the name Bologna Marittima. According to Wikipedia, the recent return of the name Bologna Mare on brown tourist signs has caused discontent and protests among residents. The resort forms a kind of extension of Milano Marittima.

Getting there

As the crow flies, Milano Marittima is 3.6 km to the south, Cervia 5.5 km to the south and Ravenna 16.4 km to the north-west. Lido di Classe, on the other bank of the river mouth, is 1.9 km to the north as the crow flies. Two main roads cross the resort: viale Romagna and via Lord Byron. Viale Romagna is one-way in the direction of Lido di Classe, runs through the centre and is flanked by a cycle path that covers the whole resort. Via Lord Byron is the main thoroughfare and links the hamlet to Lido di Classe and Milano Marittima. Lido di Savio has cycle paths along the seafront and in the pine forest.

When to go

According to QualeSpiaggia data, the beach faces east. With the north-east wind (grecale), the east wind (levante) and the south-east wind (scirocco), the wind blows in from the sea and the beach is exposed to waves. With the south-west wind (libeccio), the west wind (ponente) and the north-west wind (maestrale), the wind blows from the land and the beach is sheltered, with calmer water close to shore. The north wind (tramontana) and the south wind (ostro) hit it from the side. This is an indication based on the orientation of the coast, not a forecast.

The local economy is based on summer beach tourism. The municipal tourism website writes that at sunset the resort turns into an elegant little town, full of shops and restaurants.

Seabed and sea

The shore is made of very fine sand, with a shallow seabed protected by artificial breakwaters. The municipal tourism website speaks of a gentle, sandy beach and a clean, shallow sea. In the 2025 season the European Environment Agency rated the bathing water quality as excellent. You can go surfing, sailing and running and play beach tennis and beach volleyball.

Facilities and free beach

The offer includes hotels, apartments, campsites, restaurants, entertainment venues and beach establishments. Rows of umbrellas colour the whole shoreline. Many hotels have swimming pools and tennis courts. The regional tourism portal, on a page updated in 2023, lists a mobile tourist information office (IAT) in Lido di Savio, open from June to September. In 2026 Lido di Savio appears on the FEE Blue Flag list for the municipality of Ravenna, together with Porto Corsini, Marina di Ravenna/Lido Adriano, Lido di Dante/Lido di Classe and Casalborsetti.

Rules and protected areas

According to the tourism website of the municipality of Ravenna, from Friday 3 April to Monday 2 November 2026 dogs may access the shoreline and the water along the whole coast from 6 to 8 a.m. During that time slot in 2026, owners reach the beach using the walkways and boards of the beach establishments. In 2026 the free dog area in Lido di Savio, open from dawn to dusk, is a stretch of free beach of about 40 metres on the south side of the breakwater that runs across the mouth of the Savio river. On the other side of the same breakwater, in Lido di Classe, there is one of about 60 metres in 2026.

The rules published by the municipality admit only dogs registered with the dog registry and given the required vaccinations. The lead must not exceed 1.50 metres, must not be extendable, and a rigid or soft muzzle is required. Dogs may swim in the sea in front of the designated areas, avoiding the middle hours of the day. Droppings must be removed immediately with scoops or bags.

In the list of establishments that accept animals, updated in June 2026, those in Lido di Savio include Bagno Lupo, Bagno Paolo, Bagno Levante, Bagno Oscar, Bagno Banana Beach, Bagno Hotel Apollonia, Bagno Internazionale, Bagno Kilauea, Bagno Matisse and Bagno Saggitario. The website warns that the list may change during the bathing season.

With children

The municipal tourism website describes tourists sunbathing and children playing together in complete safety along the shoreline. Even where the sea is shallow, children in the water should always be watched.

Nearby

According to the official Ravenna tourism blog, Lido di Savio is the last of the beaches to the south of the Ravenna Riviera. The municipal tourism website suggests it as a starting point for visiting the historic centre of Ravenna, known for the mosaics of its churches, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The early Christian monuments of Ravenna have been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1996. The municipal territory of Ravenna includes nine beach resorts on the Romagna riviera.

Among the experiences suggested by the website is a visit to the Saline di Cervia salt pans. In the summer months it also recommends the Labirinto Dedalo, just inland, presented as the largest maize maze in Europe. For evenings out the website points to the venues of Milano Marittima, Cervia and Cesenatico. It also mentions theme parks such as Mirabilandia, Safari Ravenna and Italia in Miniatura. The official Ravenna tourism blog presents Mirabilandia as the largest amusement park in Europe. Of the ancient Ravenna pine forests, those of San Vitale and Classe remain, protected within the Po Delta regional park. The pine forests were created by the Romans as a living store for the needs of the shipyards of Classe.
