Marotta beach: beach guide
What the beach is like
Marotta beach lies in the municipality of Mondolfo, in the province of Pesaro e Urbino, in the Marche region. Marotta is a seaside resort washed by the Adriatic Sea along its entire 5 km length. Along the shoreline, stretches of sandy beach alternate with stretches of rocky beach. The stretch mapped as Spiaggia di Marotta is sandy. To the north-west Marotta borders the locality of Ponte Sasso, in the municipality of Fano.
The Marotta seafront is part of the wider Ciclovia Adriatica project and has a wide cycle path running alongside the pavement and the low wall that separates it from the beach. According to the municipality's website, in recent years that wall has become the centrepiece of «Mosaichiamo la città», an urban regeneration initiative supported by the Comune di Mondolfo and promoted by the cultural association Chiaro Scuro, which has decorated much of the shoreline with colourful mosaics. The mosaics were made together with local bodies and organisations, such as the schools of Marotta and Mondolfo and some local artists. The first one was made in the Villa Valentina car park, and others were used for the renovation of the pier.
The pier stands on the Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo and, according to the municipality, is one of the most characteristic spots of the Blue Flag riviera of Marotta. It was built in the immediate post-war period, when the local community needed a landing place for its fishing boats and a breakwater. In 2017 it was renovated with new paving, lantern-shaped lights and mosaics on the low walls. The pier is a stopping point for the seafront stroll and the venue for many recreational and cultural events in the summer season.
Getting there
The beach's reference point is 0.6 km as the crow flies north-west of the village of Marotta. Mondolfo is 3.8 km as the crow flies south-west of the beach, Senigallia 9.8 km to the south-east and Fano 11.8 km to the north-west.
For those arriving by car there are the A14 motorway, exit Marotta-Mondolfo, and the SS 16 Adriatica. By train you arrive at Marotta-Mondolfo station, on the Ancona-Bologna railway line. The station and the goods yard date from 1884. According to Wikivoyage, from the station you can take the public bus service to the centre of Mondolfo and to the localities of the Cesano valley. You can also arrive via Miramare airport (RN) and Raffaello Sanzio airport in Falconara (AN).
When to go
Every year since 1948, at the end of April, Marotta hosts the Sagra dei garagoi. Garagoi, or pelican's foot shells, are small sea molluscs that are very common in the area from Rimini to Ancona. Since 2009 it has been possible to revive the Festa della Tratta, with a historical re-enactment of fishing with a hand-hauled net, which is now banned. The event takes place between the end of July and early August.
The beach faces north-east. With the north wind (tramontana), the north-east wind (grecale) and the east wind (levante), the wind comes from the sea and the beach is exposed to waves and rough sea. With the south wind (ostro), the south-west wind (libeccio) and the west wind (ponente), the wind blows from the land and the beach is sheltered, with calmer water near the shore. The sirocco (scirocco) and the mistral (maestrale) blow across the shoreline instead. These indications are derived from the orientation of the coast and are not weather forecasts.
Seabed and sea
The beach faces the Adriatic Sea. While sand and rock alternate along the shore, the seabed is uniformly sandy. In the 2025 season the European Environment Agency rated the bathing water quality at the monitoring point associated with the beach as excellent. The municipality's tourism website describes an Adriatic rich in fish, with colours ranging from gentian blue to deep blue and light blue.
Facilities and free beach
In 2026 Marotta appears on the Blue Flag (Bandiera Blu) list for the municipality of Mondolfo. Among the beach concessions the municipality lists Bagni Gabbiano, Bagni Monasco, Bagni Solindo, Bagni Nettuno and Happy Days Beach. On 18 January 2014 the Beach Stadium Marotta was opened, an indoor sports ground for sand sports. It is a good idea to bring water and sun protection.
Nearby
In November 1917, during a storm, an armed pontoon of the navy, the Faà di Bruno, ran aground off Marotta. Eleven young women from the village, aboard a small boat and despite the rough sea, reached the crew and brought demijohns, hot food and baskets of fruit. In August 1919 the young women received the Navy's bronze medal, and the municipality commemorates them with a monument in the Giardini Le 11 Eroine in Marotta.
The origin of the name Marotta is traced back to the Latin Mala Rupta or Mauri Rupta. In 1544 Pope Paul III had a stone tablet erected to end the disputes over the boundaries between Mondolfo and Fano. The tablet has been restored and placed on the boundary in Via Vecchia Osteria. Until 17 July 2014 the locality of Marotta was divided among three municipalities: Mondolfo, San Costanzo and Fano. On 9 March 2014 a referendum approved unification with 67.3% of the votes. On 15 May 1995 the 3rd stage of the Giro d'Italia finished in Marotta with a win by Mario Cipollini.
Mondolfo is a member of the «I Borghi più belli d'Italia» association. The castle of Mondolfo, at 144 m above sea level, overlooks the coast and the road running along it and guards the mouth of the Cesano. From the Belvedere, looking east, you can see the Adriatic. Mondolfo once had to fight off an attack by Turks who had landed at Marotta, and to guard the mouth of the Cesano the Bastia, a four-sided tower, was built roughly where Piano Marina stands today. Piano Marina is 3 km as the crow flies south-east of the beach. Fano is a town on the Adriatic with a complex of almost intact Roman and medieval fortifications.
