Spiaggia di Orvile: guide to the beach at Posada
What the beach is like
The Spiaggia di Orvile belongs to the municipality of Posada, in the province of Nuoro, on the Tyrrhenian Sea (Tirreno). The village of Posada lies 3.4 km south-west of the beach as the crow flies. Orvile beach is enclosed in an arc of about 500 metres, which begins on its northern side at a rocky point. On its southern side Orvile beach borders the beach of Iscraios. The beach of Sos Iscràios lies 0.8 km to the south of Orvile as the crow flies.
The Orvile shore, winding and of varying width, is made of soft, light-coloured sand. Behind the Orvile shore there are many small dunes and a large pine wood. The sand is medium-fine, and the beach surface is sandy too.
According to Wikipedia, together with the beaches of San Giovanni, Su Tiriarzu, Due Pini and Iscraios Orvile makes up the five beaches of Posada, awarded the 5 sails of Legambiente. SardegnaTurismo, the official tourism website of the Sardinia Region, also writes that the beaches of Posada, Orvile among them, have been receiving the Legambiente Cinque Vele award for years.
The Comune di Posada notes that, from the hill of the Castello della Fava, looking east one sees the green of the Orvile pine wood and the whiteness of the beaches. According to the website of the Tepilora regional nature park, the Orvile pine wood, the Aragonese tower of San Giovanni and the small tourist harbour help to define the coast of Posada.
Getting there
By car, the SS 125 Orientale Sarda road, on the stretch between Siniscola and Olbia, runs through the village of Posada. From the SS 131 d.c.n. Abbasanta-Nuoro-Olbia take the Posada-Lodè-Torpè exit and continue on the SP 24 towards Posada. For those coming from Nuoro, you follow the 131 D.C.N. expressway for about 55 km. According to Wikivoyage, for those travelling by bus the ARST 514 Olbia-Nuoro line stops at Posada. The same guide states that in summer the Deplano company links Posada by bus to Olbia-Costa Smeralda airport, with the seasonal Olbia aeroporto-Cala Gonone line. According to Wikipedia, the beach has a paid car park.
When to go
According to QualeSpiaggia data, calculated from the orientation of the coast, Orvile beach faces east. Based on orientation alone, it is sheltered from the south-west wind (libeccio), the west wind (ponente) and the mistral (maestrale), which blow from the land. The north-east wind (grecale), the east wind (levante) and the sirocco (scirocco), on the other hand, come from the sea and can bring waves and choppy water close to shore. The tramontane (tramontana) and the south wind (ostro) blow across the shore. This is an indication derived from orientation, not a forecast. Before setting out, it is worth checking the day's forecast.
Seabed and sea
The water of Orvile beach is green and blue in colour and the seabed slopes gently over a first stretch. According to the European Environment Agency, in the 2025 season the bathing water along this stretch was rated excellent. According to SardegnaTurismo, sailing, spearfishing, windsurfing and kitesurfing can be practised along the Posada coastline. Beach tennis and volleyball can also be played there, and the coast can be ridden by bike or on horseback.
Facilities and free beach
Besides the paid car park, Wikipedia mentions a restaurant and a bar on Orvile beach. A sunshade and drinking water are useful in the hottest hours.
Rules and protected areas
According to Wikipedia, part of the beach is set aside for dogs. With municipal executive resolution no. 68/A of 4 July 2016, the Comune di Posada designated the Orvile area as the place where dogs are allowed on the beach. In a notice dated 10 August 2023, the Comune di Posada ordered that the area be used in compliance with ordinance no. 24/16. Before bringing a dog, it is worth checking the rules in force with the municipality.
Nearby
According to SardegnaTurismo, Su Tiriarzu is the southernmost part of a long sandy stretch of four kilometres, which takes on various names along its course. Heading north from Su Tiriarzu you reach the beaches of Orvili, the spelling used by the website, and Iscraios. Behind Su Tiriarzu there are dunes, pine wood and a lagoon area of interconnected ponds, home to various bird species, including pink flamingos. To the north of Orvile, 3.4 km away as the crow flies, lie the Spiagge di Baia Sant'Anna. The village of La Caletta, in the municipality of Siniscola, lies 4.8 km to the south of the beach as the crow flies.
According to the Comune di Posada, it can be assumed that by the thirteenth century the castle had already been built and the village fortified. The Comune also tells the legend of the Turkish siege around 1300, lifted after a pigeon fed with the last broad beans fell into their camp. According to Wikivoyage, Posada is one of the borghi più belli d'Italia (most beautiful villages of Italy). The rio Posada, which crosses the plain, can be travelled by canoe to watch the pink flamingos. Among the places around Posada is the Tepilora, Sant'Anna and Rio Posada regional nature park.
