Spiaggia di Passoscuro: beach guide
What the beach is like
The beach of Passoscuro lies in the municipality of Fiumicino, in the metropolitan city of Rome, Lazio, and faces the Tyrrhenian Sea. Passoscuro, sometimes written Passo Oscuro, is a hamlet of Fiumicino on the coast north-west of Rome, to the north of the town of Fregene. The village lies close to the wide sandy beach that characterises the Lazio coast north of Fiumicino. Passoscuro is the northernmost of the municipality's bathing areas. According to Wikipedia, thanks to its slightly off-centre position, less affected by residential and commuter tourism, the Passoscuro shore offers more intact coastline, with coastal dunes still preserved, than the beaches further south.
Passoscuro lies within the area of the Riserva Naturale Statale del Litorale Romano, which protects coastal dunes, Mediterranean scrub and wetlands. Its beaches are wide, with fine, golden sand. The small, low houses reach beyond the edge of the beach, where the coastal dune once must have stood. For this reason the village has no seafront promenade, and from the road running closest to the shoreline the sea can only be seen in glimpses.
Getting there
The beach's reference point lies 0.8 km as the crow flies north-west of the village of Passoscuro. Rome lies 27.4 km as the crow flies east of the beach. The centre of Fiumicino is 16.2 km as the crow flies to the south-east, Ladispoli 8.5 km to the north-west. The municipal territory has the stations of Maccarese-Fregene and Torrimpietra-Palidoro, on the FL5 Roma-Ladispoli-Civitavecchia railway line. Rome-Fiumicino international airport also lies within the municipal territory.
When to go
In summer Passoscuro becomes a day-trip destination for bathers, mainly from the capital or from campsites and accommodation in the area. In 2025 the municipality of Fiumicino opened the bathing season from 17 May to 21 September.
The beach faces south-west. With the ostro, the libeccio and the ponente the wind blows from the sea and the beach is exposed to waves and rough sea. With the tramontana, the grecale and the levante the wind blows from land and the beach is sheltered, with calmer water close to shore. The scirocco and the maestrale blow across the shoreline instead. These are indications derived from the orientation of the coast, not weather forecasts.
Seabed and sea
For the 2025 season the European Environment Agency (EEA) rates the bathing water quality of this stretch as excellent. The seabed is shallow and slopes gently. The beach floor is sand. Before going into the water, it is advisable to check sea conditions and the warning flags.
Facilities and free beach
A distinctive feature of Passoscuro is the large number of free beaches, with direct and free access. There are also some beach clubs, simpler than those of Fregene but with sunbeds, umbrellas and refreshment points. For the 2025 season the municipality of Fiumicino required beach facilities to provide a continuous lifeguard service from 9:00 to 19:00. In 2025 the beach clubs also had to keep access to the shoreline and to the free beaches open through their entrances. The same 2025 ordinance asked concession holders to reserve at least one umbrella in the front rows for people with disabilities, with walkways and raised sunbeds.
Rules and protected areas
In the 2025 season, Fiumicino's bathing ordinance banned animals from the beaches during bathing hours, with some exceptions. In 2025 dogs were allowed on free beaches until 8:30 and after 19:00, and all day on a stretch of Passoscuro about 200 metres long between the kite zone and the concession of the Ospedale Bambino Gesù, subject to restrictions between April and July. In 2025 kitesurfing was banned along the whole municipal coastline except in seven zones, including one between Passoscuro and Palidoro. The ordinance also prohibited damaging flora and fauna, especially in the areas of the Riserva Naturale del Litorale Romano.
In September 2025 the municipality of Fiumicino reported a loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nest on the beach of Passoscuro, by the Nautinclub beach club on via Ghilarza. The nest was fenced off and a mayoral ordinance of September 2025 prohibited, until hatching, entering the area, occupying it with umbrellas and using bright lights at night nearby. If you come across fences on the sand, respect them and keep your distance.
With children
The Regional Council of Lazio considers swimming suitable for families with children too, thanks to the shallow, gently sloping seabed. With small children it is worth bringing an umbrella, a hat and enough water.
Nearby
In the northern part of the village, at the mouth of the Fosso delle cadute, on private land, stands the Torre di Palidoro. The tower was built in the eleventh century against Saracen raids and rebuilt in the sixteenth century. Remains in opus reticulatum of a Roman villa have come to light by the tower. At the locality of Torre di Palidoro, Salvo D'Acquisto was killed on 23 September 1943.
The beaches of Passoscuro were chosen by Federico Fellini for the final scene of La dolce vita, with the carcass of a manta ray hauled ashore by fishermen. In the summer of 2021 Passoscuro was the main location of the film L'immensità by Emanuele Crialese, starring Penélope Cruz. The beach of Marina di Maccarese lies 2.5 km as the crow flies to the south-east, and Fregene 6.7 km in the same direction. Around Fiumicino are the Riserva Naturale Statale Litorale Romano and the Oasi Bosco Foce del fiume Arrone.
