Spiaggia di Porto Palo (Menfi): beach guide
What the beach is like
The beach of Porto Palo lies in the municipality of Menfi, in the province of Agrigento, Sicily, and faces the Strait of Sicily (Canale di Sicilia). The beach's reference point lies 1.2 km as the crow flies east of the village of Porto Palo. Porto Palo is a hamlet of Menfi, set in the middle of a natural amphitheatre of the coast. In ancient times the village was the eastern port of Selinunte. At Porto Palo the shore is made of light, very fine sand. A sandy beach extends along the whole length of the harbour.
In the village of Porto Palo, 1.2 km west of the reference point, the white houses of the old fishing settlement climb the promontory and have kept their old appearance. At the top of the village's hill stands the watchtower against corsairs, built in 1583 to defend the town from pirate raids. In 2026 Menfi appears on the FEE's Blue Flag (Bandiera Blu) beach list with two stretches, Porto Palo (Cipollazzo) and Lido Fiori (Bertolino).
Getting there
The centre of Menfi is 5.6 km as the crow flies, north-east of the beach. The reference airports are Palermo and Trapani. According to Wikivoyage, Menfi has no train station, while regional buses connect it with Sciacca, Castelvetrano and Palermo. The same guide names the car as the most convenient way to reach Menfi and the beaches along the coast, and mentions paid parking near the beach.
A paved cycling and walking path built along a former railway line links Menfi to Porto Palo or continues to the mouth of the Carboj river, towards Sciacca. The route is flat and runs through vineyards and olive groves.
When to go
Wikivoyage gives late spring to early autumn as the best period for the beach. Visit Sicily, the tourism portal of the Sicilian Region, presents Menfi as a destination that also suits the off-season, thanks to its mild climate all year round. According to Wikipedia, Porto Palo celebrates the feast of the Madonna delle Grazie from the last Sunday of July to the first Sunday of August. The statue of the Madonna is carried by sea aboard a local fisherman's boat.
Judging from the orientation of the coast, the beach faces south. With the sirocco (scirocco), the south wind (ostro) and the south-west wind (libeccio) the wind blows from the sea and the beach is exposed to waves and rough sea. With the north wind (tramontana), the north-east wind (grecale) and the mistral (maestrale) the wind blows from land and the beach is sheltered, with calmer water close to shore. The east wind (levante) and the west wind (ponente) blow across the shoreline instead. This is an indication, not a forecast.
Seabed and sea
In the 2025 season the European Environment Agency (EEA) rated the bathing water quality of this stretch as excellent. According to Wikipedia, Porto Palo has received the Blue Flag 24 times thanks to its sandy beach and clean water. The website of the municipality of Menfi, by contrast, speaks of nineteen Blue Flag awards for the sea and shores of the whole municipal territory. Wikivoyage describes calm waters and golden sand.
Underwater finds have been made in the village's ancient harbour, including the wreck of a Roman ship that sank near the present-day western pier (molo di ponente). It is advisable to check the seabed by entering the water slowly.
Facilities and free beach
According to the municipality, the few beach clubs in the area are concentrated on the Porto Palo shore, while the rest of the beaches are freely accessible. The municipal page lists free access, open 24 hours a day and also available to people with disabilities. Wikivoyage calls the facilities basic and mentions some beach clubs offering sunbeds and refreshments. The village has a small harbour for pleasure boats and fishing boats.
With children
Visit Sicily includes Porto Palo di Menfi in its list of 2022 Green Flags (Bandiere Verdi) in Sicily, beaches identified by paediatricians as suitable for children. According to Wikivoyage, in summer the beach is popular with families and locals. Visit Sicily describes the beaches of Menfi as long stretches of golden sand, ideal for families. With small children it is useful to bring an umbrella, a hat and water.
Nearby
Behind Porto Palo lies the Conca della Regina, a small cove linked to a legend about an emir's daughter. Le Solette lies 2 km as the crow flies west of the beach. The Solette area is made up of clay hills that slope gently down to the sea and form low, sandy coves with a few rocks breaking the surface. The submerged rocks and the meadow of aquatic plants favour its biodiversity. Further on, the coast reaches the nature reserve at the mouth of the Belìce river, which covers 129 hectares of dunes, river mouth and Mediterranean scrub.
On the other side of Porto Palo the coast continues along the Serrone Cipollazzo, a hilly area covered with sand and reeds. Its dunes keep changing shape as the winds move the sand, and they protect the habitats behind them. The beach of Contrada Cipollazzo lies 1.7 km as the crow flies to the east, and the village of Lido Fiori 3.6 km in the same direction. Beyond Lido Fiori, Menfi's other seaside resort, is the hill of Capparrina di Mare, on whose beach loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) sometimes lay their eggs. Further along the coast there is also the beach of Giache Bianche, with white pebbles along the shoreline and a small pine wood.
The village of Selinunte lies 6.9 km as the crow flies to the west. Wikivoyage calls the archaeological park of Selinunte one of the most impressive in Sicily, with a vast complex of Greek temples and the remains of the acropolis.
