What the beach is like

The beach of Rosolina Mare lies in the municipality of Rosolina, in the province of Rovigo, Veneto, and faces the Adriatic. Rosolina Mare is a hamlet and seaside resort of the municipality. The area is a thin sandy peninsula crossed by several rows of dunes, which separates the sea from the lagoons behind it. According to Wikipedia the peninsula is about 8 km long and 1 to 3 km wide, and the beach runs along its whole length. The regional tourism portal Veneto Around Me instead gives a sandy beach about 7 km long and calls it the longest in Polesine.

Rosolina Mare is one of the scanni of the regional Po Delta Park, islands or peninsulas of sand carried to the sea by rivers and shaped by wind and waves. The scanni protect the lagoons from the force of the sea: on the seaward side they are beaches beaten by waves, while on the inner side they are covered by vegetation that tolerates brackish water and by reed beds. The pine wood, which in some areas takes on the character of a holm oak wood, extends along the peninsula. The land formed over the centuries from the sediments of the Po and the Adige. The first settlements date back to the Fifties and Sixties, with activities linked to fishing and later to tourism. In 2026 Rosolina Mare appears on the FEE's Blue Flag (Bandiera Blu) beach list.

Getting there

The beach's reference point lies 1 km as the crow flies north-east of the built-up area of Rosolina Mare. The built-up area occupies the central-northern part of the peninsula. By car the resort is reached via the SP 65, a branch of the Strada statale 309 Romea that starts from the hamlet of Volto and follows the course of the Adige almost all the way. The nearest airport is Venice. There are BusItalia bus services on the Rovigo - Adria - Rosolina Mare route, which also carry bicycles.

The beach clubs are a few metres from hotels, inns and apartments. The beach has both natural free areas and stretches with accommodation facilities.

When to go

The resort, which relies mainly on tourism, is busy above all in summer, while in winter the number of residents drops sharply. The best period is summer, although several events begin from early May, many of them held on the beaches. Out of season, a municipal ordinance from 2024 allowed horse riding along the shoreline from 26 October 2024 to 9 March 2025, when the beach is not used for bathing activities.

According to QualeSpiaggia data, the beach faces east. With the grecale, the levante and the scirocco the wind blows from the sea and the beach is exposed to waves and rough sea. With the libeccio, the ponente and the maestrale the wind blows from land and the beach is sheltered, with calmer water close to shore. The tramontana and the ostro blow across the shoreline instead. These are indications derived from the orientation of the coast, not weather forecasts.

Seabed and sea

For the 2025 season the European Environment Agency (EEA) rates the bathing water quality of this stretch as excellent. The beach floor is sand. The sources consulted give neither the water depth nor the slope of the seabed. Before going into the water, it is advisable to check sea conditions and the warning flags. At its northern end the peninsula is bordered by the Adige river, which flows into the sea at the locality of Casoni. At the locality of Boccavecchia there was once the mouth of an old branch of the Po, called the Po di Tramontana.

Facilities and free beach

The Po Delta Park lists Rosolina Mare among the largest scanni equipped for bathing, together with Boccasette and Barricata. There are also secluded, quiet beaches in contact with protected nature. Along the shoreline the morning breeze carries the scent of wild liquorice. Among the campsites is the Rosa Pineta Camping village, with chalets, bungalows, pitches and a swimming pool.

Rules and protected areas

An ordinance issued by the mayor of Rosolina in October 2024 restates the rules on animals set by the bathing-activities regulation adopted by the municipality in May 2024. According to that text, dogs and other pets were not allowed to access or cross the shoreline. To the south of the Rosolina Mare beach, the ordinance designates a free area of about 7,630 square metres, with 50 m of sea frontage, where in 2024 accompanied dogs and other pets could go and stay. In 2024 lifeguard service was not guaranteed on that stretch. The ordinance also regulates the concession areas that operators may have equipped to welcome dogs, shown on the plans with a total sea frontage of 392 m.

The horse rides authorised for the winter of 2024-2025 had to stay on the shoreline, without touching footpaths, forest tracks or dune areas. The sites of the Natura 2000 network include the Dune di Rosolina e Volto.

With children

From early May many beach events are aimed at both children and adults. Veneto Around Me lists the Porto Caleri botanical garden under the category «Family Holidays». With children it is worth bringing an umbrella, a hat and enough water.

Nearby

In the southernmost part of the peninsula, at the locality of Porto Caleri, are the Porto Caleri coastal botanical garden and the Caleri lagoon, which hosts various migratory and resident animal species. The garden covers 44 hectares and includes different habitats, from the lagoon to the dunes and the beach. Its flora includes rare endemic species such as Tommasini's knapweed and Salicornia veneta. The garden hosts the only population in Veneto of the common spadefoot toad, a very rare amphibian. The loop trail starts from the car park at the locality of Porto Caleri, is graded easy and takes about 2 hours. A panoramic wooden boardwalk shows the transition from scrub to sea, from the dark green of juniper to the silvery green of marram grass and the white of the sand on the shoreline. The Park's website gives an opening period for the garden from March to October.

Isola Verde lies 3.4 km as the crow flies north of the beach and Chioggia 9.2 km to the north-west. The centre of Rosolina, inland, is 9.9 km as the crow flies to the south-west. Wikivoyage also suggests the itinerary of the walled towns of Veneto.
