Mugoni beach: beach guide
What the beach is like
Mugoni beach, Platja de Mugoni in Algherese and Ispiàgia de Mugoni in Sardinian, lies in north-western Sardinia, in the locality of the same name within the municipality of Alghero. It faces the bay of Porto Conte and is part of the Porto Conte regional nature park. The tourism portal of the Sardinia Region describes it as an inlet in the wide bay of Porto Conte, one of the attractions of the Riviera del Corallo.
According to the park, the beach stretches for more than two km and looks out over the headland of Capo Caccia. The regional portal also gives a length of two kilometres. The two sources do not agree on the colour of the sand. The regional portal speaks of shades ranging from ochre to orange, while the park's page lists Mugoni among the white-sand beaches of the area.
Behind the beach lies the Mugoni pine wood. The most common species are maritime pine, eucalyptus and Mediterranean scrub. In the wood of pines and eucalyptus you can shelter from the sun. Along the beach there are secluded coves, including the second beach of Mugoni, La Stalla. The Romans called the bay nymphaeus portus.
Getting there
Mugoni is in the locality of Porto Conte. It is reached along the SP 55, and 8 km before Capo Caccia a sign for the beach appears on the left. As the crow flies, the centre of Alghero is 11.8 km to the south-east and Fertilia 7.6 km to the east. According to Wikivoyage, Alghero-Fertilia airport is linked to the town by bus lines and Alghero station is served by the ARST Sassari-Alghero line.
The regional portal mentions a large car park, also used by campervans. With ordinance no. 2/2026, the Porto Conte park banned all vehicles from stopping, around the clock (24 hours), from 1 May to 31 December 2026 in the areas next to the edge of the woodland around La Stalla and Mugoni and on the local access roads of the bay of Porto Conte and of Mugoni. The ordinance justifies the ban by the risk of fires and by the litter left behind by parked vehicles. Another park ordinance from 2026 also refers to executive ordinance no. 501 of 18 July 2025 on the temporary regulation of vehicle traffic serving the beaches of Mugoni, Porto Conte/La Stalla and other localities. Before setting off, it is worth checking the parking rules in force.
When to go
The beach faces south. With the north wind (tramontana), the north-east wind (grecale) and the mistral (maestrale) the wind blows from the land and the sea close to shore tends to be calmer. With the sirocco (scirocco), the south wind (ostro) and the south-west wind (libeccio) the wind blows in from the sea and the beach is exposed to waves. The east wind (levante) and the west wind (ponente) hit it from the side. This is an indication based on the orientation of the coast, not a forecast.
The regional portal describes it as very busy and popular with windsurfers and surfers.
Seabed and sea
The regional portal describes emerald-coloured water that is particularly calm. According to the park's page, the beaches of the area have excellent water quality and colours ranging from light blue to turquoise. In the 2025 season the water at Mugoni was rated excellent by the EEA. The beach faces the Sea of Sardinia (Mar di Sardegna).
Facilities and free beach
The regional portal describes it as equipped with bathing establishments, boat rental, a diving centre, bars, restaurants and a camping area. It also describes it as accessible to people with disabilities and suitable for families with children. According to the park's page, the main bathing facilities are available on the beaches of the area.
Rules and protected areas
The whole bay of Porto Conte is part of the Capo Caccia - Isola Piana marine protected area. The regulations of the marine area ban hunting, capturing, collecting and damaging animal and plant species, and in particular spearfishing. Recreational fishing is allowed for residents and authorised persons.
The Anchusa sardoa, a small plant with lilac flowers, grows on the dunes of Mugoni. In 2025 the entire world population of the species was found at Mugoni and it had declined by more than 80% over the previous 15 years. For 23 January 2025 the park had scheduled, together with some school classes, the planting of young seedlings along the shore. In 2025 the project to recover the seeds and grow the seedlings involved researchers from the universities of Sassari and Cagliari. On that occasion the park drew attention to the increasingly improper use of dune habitats. On the beach it is best to keep off the dunes and use the existing paths.
Nearby
The Baia delle Ninfe is 1.2 km to the south-east as the crow flies, Cala Viola 2.4 km to the north-west. The Lazzaretto beach is 5.6 km to the south-east as the crow flies. Lazzaretto beach has light-coloured sand and ten secluded coves.
Nearby there are also the Grotte di Nettuno, on the north-western side of the Capo Caccia headland, and the nuraghe complex of Palmavera. According to the regional portal, the boat for visits to the Grotta di Nettuno lands at Cala Dragunara.
