Marina di Bibbona: beach guide
What the beach is like
Marina di Bibbona beach belongs to the seaside hamlet of the municipality of Bibbona, in the province of Livorno, Tuscany. The shoreline faces the Ligurian Sea. The resort is also called Marina del Forte, after the Forte di Bibbona. The coast includes wide beaches of fine sand, the typical tomboli (dune belts covered in Mediterranean scrub) and dunes. The tomboli formed in the last century and shelter the farmland inland from sea winds. They consist of low vegetation that separates the beach from the hinterland.
Behind the sandy areas grows a pinewood thick with juniper. The beach stretches for kilometres and links the Tomboli di Cecina nature reserve with Castagneto Carducci. Thanks to its length, quiet corners can be found even at the busiest times. In 2026 the Marina di Bibbona centro-sud stretch appears on the Blue Flag (Bandiera Blu) beach list compiled by FEE. From the eighties onwards the village saw strong building growth, mostly residences and homes, which helped establish its role as a tourist resort.
Getting there
The reference point of the beach lies 0.7 km as the crow flies west of the village of Marina di Bibbona. Coming along the Aurelia road (SS1), take the La California exit and follow the signs for Marina di Bibbona. The municipality lists these ways onto the beach.
A path starts from Piazza del Gineprino and crosses the century-old pinewood. Another way in is from Via del Tombolo Meridionale, a side street of Via dei Cavalleggeri Nord. Another route, inside the public park, is also accessible to people with disabilities and is reached from Piazza degli Anemoni, behind the tourist information office.
By train, the reference regional station is Bolgheri, while fast trains stop at Cecina. Both are linked by regional trains to Livorno station.
When to go
Marina di Bibbona is quiet during the year and lively in summer, with tourists and families. According to the municipality's website, the Marina di Bibbona branch of the tourist office, in Piazza degli Anemoni, opens seasonally from April to September. The main office, in the La California area, is open all year.
According to QualeSpiaggia data, the beach faces west. With the south-westerly libeccio, the westerly ponente and the north-westerly maestrale the wind comes off the sea and the beach is exposed to waves and rough water. With the north-easterly grecale, the easterly levante and the south-easterly scirocco the wind blows from land and the beach is sheltered, with calmer water near the shore. The northerly tramontana and the southerly ostro blow across the shore instead. These indications are derived from the orientation of the coast and are not weather forecasts.
Seabed and sea
For the 2025 season the European Environment Agency (EEA) rates the bathing water quality of this stretch as excellent. The Blue Flag award attests to the cleanliness of the water. The beach is long and broad, with dunes and Mediterranean scrub between the sea and the pinewood. The municipality calls it an ideal place for lovers of swimming and water sports. The sources consulted do not give the water depth: check it when going into the sea.
Facilities and free beach
The beaches are partly equipped with bathing establishments and partly free. There are 6 daily assistance points for bathers along the shore. The bathing establishments alternate with wide stretches of free beach with facilities. Accommodation in the area includes hotels, guesthouses, apartments, campsites and residences. In 2026 one of the Marina di Bibbona restaurants listed by the Michelin guide has 1 star.
Rules and protected areas
According to the municipality, an area of the free beaches is reserved for dogs. The Marina di Bibbona pinewood is part of the Tomboli di Cecina nature reserve. The reserve is 15 km long and is divided into two zones, Tombolo Settentrionale and Tombolo Meridionale, separated by the mouth of the Cecina river. The stretch of greatest natural and tourist interest is the Tombolo Meridionale, which runs from Marina di Cecina down to Marina di Bibbona. Here in 1839 Grand Duke Leopold of Tuscany had a pinewood planted at his own expense to shelter the farmland behind it from salt spray and sea winds.
Sea daffodils and sea poppies flower on the reserve's beach. Junipers grow in the low scrub, while holm oaks, maritime pines and stone pines dominate the tall scrub. The reserve shelters wild rabbits, foxes, weasels, porcupines, roe deer and badgers.
With children
Visit Tuscany presents Marina di Bibbona as a resort suited to a holiday for the whole family, surrounded by nature. The pinewood is the place to spend days in the shade, have picnics and walk, cycle or ride on horseback. A wide 5-kilometre path crosses the pinewood and can be followed on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. In the pinewood of Marina di Castagneto Carducci is the Il Cavallino Matto amusement park, a destination for children.
Nearby
The Forte di Bibbona, also called Forte Cavalleggeri, is a defensive structure of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany built in the second half of the eighteenth century. The hamlet grew up around the fort, which housed a garrison and the stables of the light cavalry who patrolled the coast. The building has a square plan and is closed on the sea side by a brick-clad front ending in a lookout terrace. Today it periodically hosts events and art exhibitions.
The hamlet also has the church of the Madonna del Mare, built as a chapel in 1955 and dedicated to the Madonna of Pompeii.
The main town, Bibbona, is a medieval village with narrow stone lanes, arches and old churches. The historic centre has the Pieve di San Ilario, Santa Maria della Pietà and San Giuseppe. The area produces Terratico di Bibbona DOC wine, in red, rosé and white.
A few kilometres away is Bolgheri, a hamlet of Castagneto Carducci known for its wines and reached along the viale dei Cipressi. Here visitors can see the MUSEM, the Bolgheri wine museum. The centre of Cecina is 7.4 km as the crow flies north of the beach. The Tomboli di Cecina reserve offers trails for walking or cycling and equipped picnic areas.
