Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle: beach guide

What the beach is like

Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle is a free beach in the municipality of Sirolo, in the Marche region, on the Riviera del Conero. It lies below the cliffs of Monte Conero, which here rises straight out of the Adriatic with high, compact walls broken by bays and beaches. The mayor's order of 30 June 2026 describes it as a small beach of enormous renown. In 2026 Sirolo is on the Blue Flag list of FEE Italia for the Sassi Neri, San Michele, Urbani and Due Sorelle beaches.

In the sea stand the Due Sorelle rocks, two limestone sea stacks separated from the mainland by a narrow channel. The channel was formed by the selective erosion of the Marne a Fucoidi, rocks that are less resistant than the limestones of the Maiolica and the Scaglia Rossa. The stacks belong to the Scaglia Rossa formation, which at this spot is white. The Due Sorelle headland that closes off the beach is made of the oldest rocks exposed on Monte Conero, whitish limestones of the Early Cretaceous Maiolica, 126-121 million years old.

A legend tells that a mermaid lived in its waters and lured sailors into a cave with her song to imprison them forever. A sea demon who helped her is said to have been turned by the gods into a boulder broken in two: the two sea stacks.

Getting there

According to the 2026 order, arriving at and leaving the beach, both in ordinary situations and in emergencies, is possible only by sea. The company Traghettatori Riviera del Conero, the only operator in the area licensed to carry passengers, runs daily trips between the port of Numana and the beach. The centre of Numana lies 4 km as the crow flies south of the beach, that of Sirolo 2.5 km. The beach can also be reached by canoe, inflatable boat or small boat.

It was once also reachable over land via the Passo del Lupo, now closed. Trail 302 of the Conero Park, the Sentiero delle Due Sorelle, starts at the Sirolo town hall and is a 5.4 km hiking route, estimated at 3 hours. The trail reaches the Passo del Lupo, a spur of rock dropping sheer to the sea, from which the small Due Sorelle bay can be seen. The park warns that continuing to the beach is not allowed, because a mayor's order prohibits access. The Belvedere sud viewpoint, along trail 301, also looks out towards the Due Sorelle rocks.

When to go

Based on the orientation of the coast, QualeSpiaggia data show that the beach faces east, onto the Adriatic. With the north-easterly (grecale), the east wind (levante) and the sirocco (scirocco), the wind blows in from the sea and the beach is exposed to waves. With the south-westerly (libeccio), the west wind (ponente) and the mistral (maestrale), the wind blows from the land and the sea near the shore tends to be calmer. The north wind (tramontana) and the south wind (ostro) strike it from the side. This is an indication derived from the orientation of the coast, not a forecast.

In 2026 free booking was compulsory from 1 July to 13 September, the period of peak summer tourism. In 2025 the booking period ran from 7 July to 14 September. For the kayak trip from Portonovo, the national tourism portal recommends setting off in the early morning, when the sea is calmer.

Seabed and sea

In the 2025 season the water at Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle was rated excellent by the European Environment Agency. For divers, the remains of a merchant ship that sank in 1962 lie in its waters.

Facilities and free beach

The national tourism portal stresses the absence of services on the beach. According to the 2026 order, a lifeguard and a safety officer work on the beach every day. In front of the beach there is a buoy field where, in 2026, canoes and SUPs could be moored temporarily and free of charge. It is worth bringing water, a hat and sunscreen for the whole day.

Rules and protected areas

Mayor's order no. 10 of 30 June 2026 made free booking of a place compulsory, from 1 July to 13 September 2026, for anyone wishing to walk on or stay on the beach. In 2026 booking was done on the website turismosirolo.it. The municipality justifies the maximum number of people on grounds of safety, since evacuation is possible only by sea, and of limiting the human load as required by the Conero Park, which has included the area in the Natura 2000 network. The same order prohibits leaving canoes, SUPs, windsurfs, pedal boats and similar craft on the shoreline or on the beach. In 2026 violations were punishable by a fine of 25 to 500 euros.

Below the cliff, the municipality has put up danger signs, posts and ropes that prohibit passing and stopping there, further reducing the already limited space. In 2025 those arriving on the boats of the Traghettatori del Conero did not need to book, because the company made the booking for its customers. In 2025 children up to 8 years old were also exempt from booking, and each booking was valid for a maximum of 2 people. In 2025 a safety officer on the beach could ask to see the booking, and staying without a booking was not allowed.

Nearby

Spiaggia dei Gabbiani lies 0.2 km away as the crow flies, and the italia.it portal mentions it as a secluded stop along the kayak route from Portonovo. Spiaggia dei Sassi Neri, 1.7 km to the south, can be reached on the park's trail 303 and shows the scaglia rossa rocks typical of this stretch of coast. Spiaggia di San Michele, 2.2 km to the south, is reached on trail 304 through a wood of Aleppo pines, and leads to the Urbani cave, carved by the sea at the foot of the cliff of Sirolo.
