Spiaggia di Baia Felice: guide to the Cellole coast
What the beach is like
The Spiaggia di Baia Felice lies in the municipality of Cellole, in the province of Caserta, on the Tyrrhenian Sea (Tirreno). Baia Felice is a seaside holiday village, a frazione (hamlet) of the municipality of Cellole. The village lies between Baia Azzurra and Baia Domizia: Baia Azurra-Levagnole is 1.2 km to the south-east as the crow flies and Baia Domizia 1.6 km to the north-west. It was built in the seventies, after Cellole became a municipality separate from Sessa Aurunca. It stretches along the plain of the Domitian coast (litorale Domizio), at the foot of Monte Cicoli, with about 2,000 housing units. Baia Felice began as a private holiday village. According to Wikipedia, the village has about 100 inhabitants, a number that exceeds 10,000 in the summer season.
The Campania Region's bathing-water profile describes the area as a sandy shore, with built structures and canal mouths along the beach. The canals are the Rio Trimoletto and the Canale D'Auria, also called San Limato. Intense urban development runs parallel to the coast.
Getting there
The village is reached by a single road for vehicles, at km 11 of the via Domiziana. Although it is very close to Baia Domizia as the crow flies, the village has no internal link other than the main road, except for a footbridge over the Trimoletto stream. The centre of Cellole lies 5.2 km to the north as the crow flies. Mondragone lies 6.8 km to the south-east as the crow flies. It is worth bringing water and sun protection.
When to go
From the orientation of the coast, according to QualeSpiaggia data, the beach faces south-west. It is sheltered from the tramontane (tramontana), the north-east wind (grecale) and the east wind (levante), which blow from the land. The south wind (ostro), the south-west wind (libeccio) and the west wind (ponente), on the other hand, come from the sea and can bring waves and choppy water close to shore. The sirocco (scirocco) and the mistral (maestrale) blow across the shore. This is an indication, not a forecast.
Seabed and sea
In the Campania Region's profile, updated and reviewed in 2026, the Baia Felice bathing water is rated excellent for the years 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. In the 2025 season the European Environment Agency also rated the bathing water quality as excellent. The bathing water is affected by the mouths of the Rio Trimoletto and the Canale D'Auria, which in its final stretch also receives the waters of the Rio S. Limato. According to the profile, untreated discharges from sewer networks of the Comune di Sessa Aurunca flow into the Canale D'Auria, coming in particular from Maiano, Casamare, Sc. Ferrovia and S. Agata, along with some discharges from the same municipality's industrial area, which are fitted with treatment plants. In the Rio Trimoletto, besides irrigation water, occasional inflows of industrial wastewater, probably from dairy plants, and of livestock effluent have been recorded. The Rio S. Limato also receives rainwater discharge from the Le Perle holiday village, whose domestic wastewater goes into the sewer network and to the treatment plant serving the Comune di Cellole. Wastewater from Baia Felice, on the other hand, is pumped by a lifting station to the treatment plant at Doccia in the Comune di Cellole, which discharges into a canal flowing into the Garigliano river. The urban wastewater of Cellole's main town also goes to the same plant. On 22 August 2020, after reports of foam in the sea at Baia Domizia, ARPAC took samples in the Baia Felice area of Cellole too. The analyses showed traces of surfactants and a significant growth of phytoplankton, with microalgae not considered toxic to humans but able to cause an unusual colouring of the water. The microbiological parameters, an indicator of faecal contamination, were found to be within legal limits. According to ARPAC, the findings of that season supported the hypothesis of a natural origin for the foam reported along the Domitian coast.
Facilities and free beach
According to Wikipedia, the village has five beach clubs, some shops open in the summer months, bars, pizzerias and a restaurant. In 2026 Baia Felice and Baia Domizia sud, in Cellole, appear on the list of Blue Flag (Bandiera Blu) beaches kept by the FEE. On 14 May 2024 the Province of Caserta announced the 2024 Blue Flag won by the Comune di Cellole for the beaches of Baia Felice and Baia Domizia. In the press release the President of the Province, Giorgio Magliocca, mentioned the checks on municipal and private treatment plants and the work of the two sea-sweeping boats. For 2024 he also announced anti-plastic barriers at the mouths of the Garigliano and Volturno rivers.
Nearby
Baia Felice and the neighbouring San Limato and Le Perle, localities of Sessa Aurunca, were built near the ruins of the ancient Roman town of Sinuessa. In the area next to the Torrente d'Auria, or San Limato canal, the remains of the Roman villa of Punta San Limato have been recovered; it may have belonged to Tigellinus (Tigellino), adviser to Nero. The villa features two-tone mosaics, brought to light by the excavations and by the Roman cryptoporticus. In the village stands the parish church of Santa Maria Stella Maris, part of the diocese of Sessa Aurunca, an iron structure with glass walls. According to Wikipedia, every year on 15 August the faithful hold a procession dedicated to the Madonna. The nearest Baia Domizia beach lies 1.4 km to the north-west as the crow flies. Sessa Aurunca lies 11.8 km to the north-east as the crow flies.
