San Salvo Marina beach: beach guide
What the beach is like
San Salvo Marina beach belongs to the coastal hamlet of the municipality of San Salvo, in the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo. The hamlet faces the Adriatic and stretches for about 3 km of sandy shore along the coast. The hamlet lies at sea level and is the coastal offshoot of the municipality of San Salvo. To the north it borders the coastal territory of Vasto, that is Vasto Marina, and to the south it extends towards the mouth of the Trigno river, on the border with Molise. The built-up area lies between the Strada statale 16 Adriatica and the sea.
The Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo is characterised by long sandy beaches and shallow seabeds. According to the turismo.abruzzo.it website, the municipality's coastline stretches for about 3 km and consists of sandy beaches with gently sloping seabeds. The dunes of San Salvo Marina are protected in order to preserve the coastal dune landforms and the spontaneous coastal vegetation. Part of them forms the Giardino botanico Mediterraneo. The same tourism website notes that San Salvo is the last resort of the Costa dei Trabocchi, on the border with Molise.
At the start of the twentieth century the hamlet of San Salvo Marina was almost uninhabited and visited by upper-class tourists. In the seventies popular summer tourism took hold, linked to the first houses built for workers of the industrial zone. From 1970 the company Silex Costruzioni built the Le Nereidi residential complex, the first large tourist and property development in the hamlet. Only from the nineties did the resort reach maturity in terms of accommodation, with the construction of hotels and of the small tourist harbour in the southern part.
Getting there
The centre of San Salvo, the main town of the municipality, lies 4.6 km as the crow flies to the south-west of the beach, while Vasto is 7 km to the north-west. By car and by train the hamlet can be reached from the Vasto Sud-Montenero di Bisaccia-San Salvo junction of the Autostrada Adriatica, from the Strada statale 650 di Fondovalle Trigno and from Vasto-San Salvo station. The Marina runs alongside the SS16 Adriatica and is linked by the Trignina state road to the industrial zone and the main roads.
San Salvo Marina is crossed by a section of the Via Verde, part of the regional cycle-tourism project Bike to Coast. The path was created by reusing the former disused railway line. The local section, which links San Salvo and Vasto Marina, is paved, flat and away from car traffic.
When to go
According to QualeSpiaggia data, the beach faces north-east. With the tramontana, the grecale and the levante the wind comes from the sea and the beach is exposed to waves and rough sea. With the ostro, the libeccio and the ponente the wind blows from the land and the beach is sheltered, with calmer water close to shore. The scirocco and the mistral (maestrale), on the other hand, blow across the shoreline. These are indications derived from the orientation of the coast, not weather forecasts.
Seabed and sea
In the 2025 season the bathing water of this stretch is classified as excellent by the European Environment Agency (EEA). Wikipedia speaks of shallow seabeds along the Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo, the turismo.abruzzo.it website of gently sloping seabeds.
Facilities and free beach
In 2026 San Salvo Marina is on the list of Blue Flag (Bandiera Blu) beaches compiled by the FEE. Along the municipality's shore there are both free beaches and equipped stretches with bathing establishments. Wikipedia describes an accommodation offer based on hotels, residences and high-density bathing establishments.
According to Wikipedia, the works on the new southern seafront, started in stages in 2023 at the time the Giro d'Italia passed through, are part of a redevelopment project worth over 8 million euros. The project includes partial pedestrianisation, the renewal of underground utilities and specialised paving, and connects with the route of the Via Verde. Wikipedia reports that the completion of the southern seafront with the second lot of the pedestrian promenade is planned. The project also provides for green areas dedicated to children, dog exercise areas and small arenas for open-air shows.
With children
The turismo.abruzzo.it website describes San Salvo as a destination prized by families with children, thanks to the variety and features of its beaches.
