Spiaggia di Scoglitti: beach guide
What the beach is like
Scoglitti is the only hamlet (frazione) of Vittoria, in the free municipal consortium of Ragusa, Sicily. The village lies on the coast of the gulf of Gela, near the archaeological area of Kamarina. It faces the Strait of Sicily (Canale di Sicilia) and the beach looks south-west. The coastline has wide beaches of fine golden sand, covered by dunes. The climate of Scoglitti is very temperate and dry.
Getting there
The reference point of the beach lies 0.8 km as the crow flies north-west of the centre of Scoglitti. Vittoria lies 11.2 km as the crow flies north-east of the beach. Santa Croce Camerina is 11.8 km to the south-east, Gela 24.4 km to the north-west. The airports to use are Comiso, served by taxis and scheduled coaches, and Catania airport. For trains, the reference is Catania central station. There are few buses and it is better to get around by bike or car.
When to go
With the south wind (ostro), the south-westerly (libeccio) and the west wind (ponente) the wind blows in from the sea and the beach is exposed to waves and rough water. With the tramontane (tramontana), the north-easterly (grecale) and the east wind (levante) the wind blows from the land and the beach is sheltered, with calmer water close to shore. The sirocco (scirocco) and the mistral (maestrale) blow across the shore instead. These indications are derived from the orientation of the coast and are not weather forecasts.
Wikivoyage writes that temperatures are mild almost all year round, but summer is the best season and offers more services. The Estate scoglittese fills the summer months every year with a programme of activities and shows. From 2006 the resort equipped itself to offer visitors a summer programme of sport and culture, with a national beach volleyball tournament, open-air cinema and theatre, music and concerts. National and international beach volleyball and beach soccer championships and tournaments were held in Scoglitti from 1997 to 2016. The feast of the patron saint, Maria Santissima di Portosalvo Assunta di Kamarina, runs from 1 August to the penultimate Sunday of August.
Seabed and sea
For the 2025 season the European Environment Agency (EEA) rates the bathing water quality of this stretch as excellent. In the QualeSpiaggia data the seabed type of this stretch is not classified. The sources consulted do not give the water depth in front of the beach: it is worth checking it as you wade in.
Scoglitti has a fishing and tourist harbour, which also serves as a shelter for fishing boats. The current harbour was built in 1879, thanks to Rosario Cancellieri, a senator of the Kingdom (Regno). In the eighteenth century the earlier harbour played an important role in exporting Cerasuolo wine to Malta.
Facilities and free beach
The accessible beaches table of the «Sicilia Mare per Tutti 2025» initiative lists in Scoglitti the Riviera Lanterna, the La Capannina beach establishment on via Largo Kamarina and the Circolo Velico Anemos sailing club. In November 2023 the Sicilian Region (Regione Siciliana) issued a decree, as part of the environmental incidence assessment procedure (valutazione di incidenza ambientale), on the project submitted by the municipality of Vittoria for a cycle path along the Riviera Kamarina in Scoglitti. The village economy is based on fishing, greenhouse farming and above all tourism. Fish is sold every day at the village's small fish market.
With children
In a June 2026 press release, the Città di Vittoria writes that Scoglitti was awarded the Green Flag (Bandiera Verde) 2025, the recognition given by paediatricians to seaside resorts ideal for children and families. In the same press release the municipality announces new funds from the Sicilian Region, granted on the strength of the 2025 Green Flag, also for making the free beaches more accessible to people with disabilities. Visit Sicily's page on beaches for children includes the beach of Scoglitti among the sandy beaches suitable for children in the province of Ragusa. Scoglitti also appears among the Sicilian resorts with the Bandiere Verdi 2022 (Green Flags). With children it is worth bringing a beach umbrella and enough water.
Nearby
According to the English Wikipedia, Scoglitti was chosen by the Allies as the site of an amphibious landing in Sicily by the US 45th Infantry Division. When the landing took place, on 10 July 1943, rough seas disorganised the waves of assault boats and the soft sand hampered movement. The Italian Wikipedia dates the Anglo-American landing to 9 and 10 July 1943, as part of Operation Husky.
According to the Arab geographer al-Idrisi, the place was known as Gazirat el-Haman, meaning «Scoglietti dei colombi» (little rocks of the doves). Settlement dates back to the seventeenth century, with the founding of Vittoria, for which Scoglitti was the outlet to the sea and the port for the link with Malta. The village has the small church of Santa Maria di Portosalvo, now called San Francesco di Paola, and the mother church of Santa Maria di Portosalvo, built in 1937. There is also the lighthouse, known as «a lanterna», and many buildings in Liberty (Art Nouveau) style. In 2016 the Piccolo Museo del Mare, with an aquarium of local species, opened in the lighthouse building. Since 2018 the facility has no longer been open.
Borgo Fenicio beach is 2.6 km as the crow flies to the north-west, while Punta Braccetto beach is 7.7 km to the south-east.
