Spiagge Bianche, Rosignano: guide
What the beach is like
The Spiagge Bianche (White Beaches) are a stretch of sandy coast in the municipality of Rosignano Marittimo, in the province of Livorno, Tuscany. They lie between Rosignano Solvay and Vada, at the northernmost edge of the Maremma coast, and are washed by the Ligurian Sea.
The pale colour of the sand, which leads to comparisons with tropical coasts, is the result of years of processing and discharges of calcium carbonate from a Solvay group plant, which stands in Rosignano Solvay, about one kilometre from the coast. The works were built in 1912 and started operating in 1914. Besides soda ash, the plant has produced hydrogen peroxide, polyethylene, calcium chloride, sodium bicarbonate and hydrochloric acid. Wikipedia lists them as one of the busiest seaside destinations in Tuscany.
Getting there
The reference point of the beach is 2.4 km as the crow flies south of Rosignano Solvay and 3.1 km as the crow flies north-west of Vada. Access to the beach is over a small hill that until 1983 was a dump for production waste and household rubbish. Livorno is 22.2 km as the crow flies to the north-west, Cecina 9.5 km as the crow flies to the south-east.
When to go
The beach faces west. With the south-westerly libeccio, the westerly ponente and the north-westerly maestrale the wind comes off the sea and the beach is exposed to waves and rough water. With the north-easterly grecale, the easterly levante and the south-easterly scirocco the wind blows from land and the beach is sheltered, with calmer water near the shore. The northerly tramontana and the southerly ostro blow across the shore instead. These indications are derived from the orientation of the coast and are not weather forecasts.
In July 1994 the players of Rugby Rosignano held a party on the beach which grew over the years until it drew 25,000 people in 2003. In 2004 the municipality of Rosignano Marittimo, citing the high number of attendees, some disruption and unauthorised activities, decided to suspend it.
Seabed and sea
The beach has a sandy seabed. For the 2025 season the European Environment Agency (EEA) rates the bathing water quality of this stretch as sufficient. Wikipedia reports that the Solvay discharges include various toxic or carcinogenic pollutants, including mercury released in the past, and that for this reason the Spiagge Bianche are among the most polluted beaches in Italy. The United Nations Environment Programme lists this stretch of coast among the 15 most polluted coastal sites in Italy. Wikipedia adds that over 100,000 tonnes of waste are discharged into the sea every year and that fishing in the surrounding waters is very limited. Even in the years before the industry's conversion, this stretch of coast was awarded the Blue Flag several times. In 2026, for the municipality of Rosignano Marittimo, the Blue Flag (Bandiera Blu) list compiled by FEE names Castiglioncello and La Mazzanta.
Facilities and free beach
Along the Vada shore, shaded by pinewoods, bathing establishments alternate with large stretches of free beach, where umbrellas and deckchairs can be hired. Visit Tuscany also presents Vada as an important boating centre, with a small harbour equipped for mooring boats. The same portal describes the resort as suited to water sports such as windsurfing and its range of accommodation as rich and varied.
Rules and protected areas
Wikipedia reports a strict ban on bathing and lingering issued by the municipality near the industrial waste outfall. In April 2025 the municipality of Rosignano Marittimo, by ordinance, temporarily banned bathing in the northern and southern stretches of the Spiagge Bianche, among other areas. The ban followed routine ARPAT sampling that found values of intestinal enterococci or Escherichia coli above the limit. The municipality states that the ban stays in force until ARPAT reports that the parameters are back within the limits. According to the 2025 statement, anyone who ignores the ban risks a fine of 25 to 500 euros.
After heavy rain on the night of 7 to 8 May 2025 the mayor issued a precautionary bathing ban that also covered the Spiagge Bianche, because Asa had reported discharges into the sea from the stormwater outlets and overflow drains. The ban was lifted by an ordinance of 13 May 2025, after ARPAT analyses had confirmed that the water was fit for bathing. Before going into the water, check the signs and the municipality's notices for any bans in force.
Nearby
Vada was the ancient natural harbour of Volterra and was already known in 330 BC. At San Gaetano, excavations have uncovered the remains of a large harbour district from the second half of the first century AD, a bath building and a market. The Secche di Vada, a stretch of sea with shallow seabeds, attract fishing enthusiasts in every season. Visit Tuscany names among the resort's well-known corners the Rada del Saraceno, the Pineta di Pietra Bianca, Molino a Fuoco and the Mazzanta. Vada also has a Renaissance watchtower, an example of sixteenth-century defensive architecture.
The historic village of Rosignano Marittimo, on a green hill, is 4.6 km as the crow flies north-east of the beach and has a castle built around 1100 and later fortified. The village has the Museo civico archeologico, in Palazzo Bombardieri, with Hellenistic tombs found at Castiglioncello, and the museum devoted to the anarchist Pietro Gori. Castiglioncello is 4.1 km as the crow flies north-west of the beach.
